Tour de France 2015

Once again, this year the Tour de France is due to pass through Massat. This time it is stage 12 on Thursday, 16th July 2015.

The 195km route for this day’s stage starts at Lannemazan. The whole entourage – a parade of wacky sponsor vehicles sets off well ahead of the riders – heads towards Saint Bertrand de Comminges, one of the Pyrenees’ most famous sights, then over the Col de Portet d’Aspet.

Sponsors’ vehicles, often weird and wacky, pass through before the riders, dispensing gifts and sweets.

From there, they head for Castillon en Couserans then up to the Col de la Core, near Seix, and then onto Massat along the renowned D618 road which winds through the gorges and the valley floor.

But whatever relief the relatively flat road here gives is soon taken away by the climb from Massat up to the Port de Lers. Then it’s down again to Tarascon sur Ariege (the river) before the final climb and finish for the day, the awe-inspiring, leg-destroying killer uphill stretch to Plateau de Beille.

This year’s Tour de France runs from 4-26th July.
